 IHCHR held a press conference at the media
center of the Council of Representatives on Tuesday 8/12/2015 with the
participation of; Activists, Journalists and representatives of NGOs over the draft
law of freedom of opinion expression, gathering and peaceful demonstration. The member of IHCHR Board Dr. Athmar
Al-Shatri (Responsible for public freedoms file) has delivered a statement in
which she confirmed the refusal of; IHCHR, NGOs, Activists and Journalists to
the political power that directed against freedom of opinion expression and
peaceful demonstration in Iraq which tries to impose restriction (permission or
authorization) and prevents the right to sit-in within the draft law of
peaceful demonstration right.
At the statement, IHCHR considered these
attitudes as a clear attempts to recreate a new dictatorship in Iraq through
taking prior authorization and permission for the peaceful demonstration by the
local governments and administrative departments which the draft law gave them
the power to grant demonstration licenses.
Also,
IHCHR confirmed lingering on voting upon the law as well as taking into
consideration the suggested legal amendments to ensure the promotion of freedom
of opinion expression and the right to peaceful demonstration.
